Born from the unique needs of having a range of cosmetics that could stand up to the extreme conditions of high-end fashion photo shoots, MAC Cosmetics has established a special reputation as the make-up professional's brand of choice. It was founded in Toronto Canada in 1985 by make-up artist and photographer Frank Toskan and entrepreneur Frank Angelo. One of the hazards of the strong lighting used in fashion photography and its associated glare is that make-up can appear dull and washed out. The two Franks sought to overcome this by developing a cosmetics line that was both strong enough to stand up to these conditions as well as having the breadth of colours and products to not stifle the creativity of make-up artists. The brand is now part of the house of Estee Lauder but retains its own unique focus and quality standards.
